Baen's Universe Submission Update: Rejected

I got a short form letter via e-mail from Baen's Universe, saying "Ra-Gho-Zu" was rejected.

Nichevo.

I know the story is good. All I can do is sub to the next market on my list and move on with other stories.

I'd have thought that "Ra-Gho-Zu" would've been up Baen's Universe's alley, though.

Well, just keep sending it out. Just remember, a hundred years from now, at the 166th World SF Convention on Mars, when the story is voted "Best SF Story of the Past 100 Years," you'll be able laugh at Baens.

One of the problems of subbing to a market just before they're closing, is that they're closing to submissions because they've bought enough to fill a bunch of issues. So they may have very definite ideas of what they want to see or what length. It has to grab them the right way.

The good thing about Baen's is that every piece is read by three editors, so it's not like you're at the mercy of just one slush editor who hates you. (grin) Even if some days it feels like that. (double-grin)

Mine bounced in five days, too. (triple-word-score-grin)

Thanks for the pearls of wisdom.

Next time I'll wait for the next window rather than rush it in at the end.

Good luck with your own story.
